Star Thistle Damage

Sacramento Weed Warriors

The Parkway Foundation has partnered with the California Native Plant Society/Sacramento Weed Warriors, Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency and County Parks to implement a program aimed at eradicationg nonnative invasive plants and restoring riparian and upland habitats within the Parkway. The project wll progress in five strategic steps over a 25-year period and beyond.

Phase 1 of the project was completed in 2004 and targeted 653 acres of mature nonnative invasive plants, including Giant Reed, Tamarisk, Red Sesbania, Spanish Broom and the Chinese Tallow tree.

Phase 2, which is to begin in the fall of 2004, will build upon the work of Phase 1 by eradicating the seedlings and sprouts of Phase1 weeds. Additionally, five new weed species will be added to the eradication list including Pampas Grass, Oleander, Pyracantha, French Broom, and Scotch Broom. Restoration efforts to restore native oak and grasses will begin on 40 acres currently infested with Yellow Star Thistle.

The Parkway Foundation's responsibility is to build a community-based volunteer stewardship program. Dedicated volunteer leadership has leveraged support and protection of the American River Parkway during the past two decades. As the need for increased stewardship continues to grow, so do the opportunities for building a more comprehensive and integrated volunteer program.

The Foundation will cultivate a cadre of long-term stewards, who would be trained to tackle tasks requiring increased skills and knowledge as well as expand their leadership capabilites. We will invest in our volunteer stewardship program by providing education, training and opportunities for growth and feedback through program leadership.
